New Campaign will Move America Beyond Oil

Our Blueprint for a New Energy Future Set to Break America’s Dangerous Dependence on Oil

With every passing day, our nation grows more dependent on imported oil, our last wild places and their wildlife grow more embattled by rampant oil and gas development, and our planet’s fragile web of life unravels even more from the impacts of global warming. We cannot afford to wait for a smarter energy policy until the next President takes office three years from now. We must summon all of our resources, seize the initiative and move America into a cleaner energy future right now.

Our new campaign to Move America Beyond Oil aims to break Big Oil’s stranglehold on energy policy by:

1. Committing America to Oil Savings.

Our first goal is passing legislation called The Fuel Choices for American Security Act. Shaped by our experts, it would cut our nation’s oil dependence by 2.5 million barrels a day within 10 years -- more than we currently import daily from the Persian Gulf.

Our bill was recently sponsored in the Senate by an unlikely coalition of Democrats and Republicans, and we’ve built equally diverse support in the House of Representatives. Now we’ve got to generate overwhelming public backing in all 50 states for this critical legislation.

2. Trading in Gas Guzzlers for Super-Efficient Cars

Our vehicles burn 40 percent of all the oil we use, so making them more fuel-efficient must be a top priority. Today we’ve got a rare opportunity to make car companies part of the solution instead of part of the problem. We’ve worked with our allies to craft the Health Care for Hybrids Act, and it was recently introduced in Congress with bipartisan support. Under this bill, the government will pay part of the auto industry’s retiree health care costs. In exchange, the automakers will ramp up their production of fuel-efficient vehicles like hybrids and advanced diesels. Under our plan, everyone wins: the auto companies become more competitive by building better cars, workers get their health care, and our nation is propelled into a future of cleaner, smarter vehicles.

3. Changing the Oil -- for American BioFuels

It’s time for a national oil change: by trading in gasoline for clean-burning biofuels -- renewable fuel made from plant materials grown by American farmers. A major shift to biofuels could slash 80% of the global warming pollution that comes out of American tailpipes by 2050. We’re spearheading the fight for innovative policies that will allow biofuels to flourish. We’ve got to shift crop subsidies to farm-based fuel production, which would generate higher profits for farmers,, and fight for government incentives that will encourage gas stations to install pumps for alternative fuels.

We can turn this dream into reality right now. All it will take is a powerful and sustained campaign that harnesses America’s anger at Big Oil and channels it into effective political pressure for new and smart solutions to our oil addiction problem.
