Osama's Secret Weapon

By Neal Brandvik

Several times a year Osama Bin Laden emerges from seclusion to taunt America. There is always a quiet confidence about him as he proclaims that victory for Islam and God over America is inevitable. In addition to promising more attacks on us, Osama says he is patient and willing to wait for our demise as long as it takes. Is he crazy? Where does he get the idea that a group of rag tag thugs who live in caves is going to defeat the greatest superpower nation in history? After all, as horrendous as the 9-11attacks were, our economy rebounded quickly.

To find out where Osama gets his mojo, go to your computer and Google “Peak Oil.” One of the websites that will come up is . This meticulously documented site is authored by Matt Savinar, a recent law school graduate. It begins with the statement: “Dear Reader, civilization as we know it is about to come to an end.” Mr. Savinar is not referring to Osama’s vision of civilization but our modern, petroleum based civilization that Dick Cheney refers to as “The American Way of Life” that is not negotiable according to Mr. Cheney.

I’m betting Osama has visited this site and read it thoroughly. He’s smug and confident about the demise of America because he knows you will dismiss Mr. Savinar as a “chicken little” or “environmentalist wacko.” If you decide to defy Osama and read Mr. Savinar’s website carefully, you’ll find out many of the folks warning us about Peak Oil are very rational and conservative. One is Republican Congressman Roscoe Bartlett who has quoted the ominous warnings from and read them into the congressional record during several Peak Oil speeches in Congress. Another is Mathew Simmons, an energy investment banker and member of Dick Cheney’s Energy Task Force. Need more reason to take Peak Oil seriously? How about the CEO of Chevron Texaco who started a marketing campaign to address the challenges of Peak Oil with their website .

Bin Laden’s strategy is clear. He learned from another Muslim – Muhammed Ali – in his fight with George Foreman. Remember the rope-a-dope? While we exhaust our resources “taking the fight to the terrorists” instead of massively investing in alternative energy, Osama’s army will grow because Arabs know our military presence in the Middle East is all about the oil. The world knows this except for Americans, especially Iraqis who chased the British out of Iraq during the 1920s for doing the same thing. As global oil depletion squeezes the American economy, Osama’s troops will continue to assault our “Way of Life” by bombing pipelines and killing oil workers. Unfortunately, in the long run there aren’t enough tax dollars and willing young Americans to protect the Middle East’s vast oil infrastructure. Since 60% of the oil remaining on the planet is in Muslim countries, Osama’s minions never have to go far to make increasingly scarce, expensive oil more scarce and more expensive.

Geography, geology and time are on Osama’s side not ours. The Peak Oil wolf is at our door and he knows it. Osama also knows we won’t confront our petroleum demon any time soon. No politician who is interested in keeping his or her job will stop the continual building, maintaining and accessorizing of suburban sprawl that makes us utterly dependent on cheap oil. The Bush Administration can’t talk about Peak Oil because acknowledging it makes America’s oil grab in Iraq look obvious to all. They know killing for a resource that will run out some day is not palatable to a Christian nation. So Bush and Bin Laden have one thing in common. They don’t want you to know about Osama’s secret weapon -- Peak Oil.

How can you wipe the smirk off Osama’s face? Send this link to every politician and community leader you can think of: . The Hirsch Report was commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy. Its conclusion challenges the notion that the free market will solve Peak Oil.

“The world has never faced a problem like Peak Oil. Without massive mitigation more than a decade before the fact, the problem will be pervasive and will not be temporary. Previous energy transitions (wood to coal and coal to oil) were gradual and evolutionary; oil peaking will be abrupt and revolutionary”

Make sure you DEMAND action other than continual war in the Middle East!

"Several times a year Osama Bin laden emerges from seclusion to taunt America"

Quite a massaging of the facts. Since the recent audio tape which allegedly has Osama Bin laden's voice on it there had been no communique from him to the outside world since October 2004. hardly qualifies as several times a year does it.

anon ~ quibbling over "several times a year" isn't the point.

Yet again, you are living proof that the walking, talking, and also the not walking or talking American masses give new credence to the quote "stupid people are real".

There is something of the zealot in rkelly. Only a zealot would get so upset about such a minor criticism. Only someone who is quite upset could repeat one of the most banal quotes in human history. Is there anything pithy in stating the absolutely obvious in the most ineloquent way?

When he says that anon doesn't get the point he misses the point himself. This articles feeds into the hype surrounding terrorism and Osama bin Laden. The opening sentence sets a tone of exaggeration and fear, which while furthering the aims of the essay is quite objectionable because it supports propaganda that is continually fed to the American public.

The biggest question is simply this........ WHEN IS PEAK OIL ?

Ok Mr. "Pithy", not so eloquent zealot, 'anon' ~ learn to read and write. But, first learn to think.

I'm being extremely rude to you because you just don't get it. Peak Oil isn't the point, either.

You appear well educated, using words like pithy, ineloquent, zealot and you can even ask rhetorical questions.

But as far as I can tell, you can't think, really, nor read, and you can't write in a unique or original fashion because what you have to say means nothing, except an eloquent command of the King's and even the Queen's language.

You want to evolve your consciousness? ~ read F. William Engdahl at and don't stop there, read his book "A Century of War Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order". It's highly dense, however, IT IS reality based ~ unlike what most Americans allow themselves to be spoon fed ~ to feel all wonderfully super power driven, as though we're special.

But I would go to the bank betting no less than one hundred dollars that you'd rather be inside your own head as a legend, than truly open your mind as to how things really are and how they work, as well.

". . Only someone who is quite upset could repeat one of the most banal quotes in human history".

Wow. "Me thinks the lady doth protest too much."

So good luck in your intellectual pursuit of winning because it is people like you who give humanity the majority count, of being brainwashed by the ignorance of choosing a narrow mind. should you wish to continue this discussion.

Yours truly, the zealot of waking people like you up, even just a little it appears ~ from you opining with such profound rhetoric.

Look Mr. Head up where the sun does NOT shine ~ get a brain because Peak Oil is NOT what it is about.

World War III, moron and people like you are why it is looming because you refuse to educate yourself ~ rather, you act like a spoiled rotten brat.

I will not give you any further of my energy because there are people who are important and wish to do an act of altruism and it is obvious, 'anon' it is certainly not you.

Go to godsmadmen dot com and click on the information about the new weapons the US Senate approved of, 2003.

Or, alternatively, continue being part of the problem.

In ancient Greece, they coined the term "IDIOT" and I bet not only did you not know this truth, but most certainly you are such and idiot you wouldn't give a rats ass one way, or another.

No-one can tell you when oil production will peak. There's noway of telling. But if you take time to search the web for info you might find that opinions range from a peak last year to a leak around 2020.

Now without the accompanying hissyfit rkelly, can you not admit that there is something deliciously ironic about a stance against war in the Middle East that uses as its instrument of persuasion the same one that warmongers do? I.E the fear of terrorism.

'A' let me help you with the IE ~
i.e. = "that is" and e.g. = "for example"

I gift you some of my energy in the hopes you can awaken the sleeping genius within. My first 'reaction' is to throttle you with verbal discourse the likes of which you could never recover ~ but on second thought I choose to rein in my lack of impulse control because it is right action for ME and say just this:

Nuclear War is not the answer to any problem because we all suffer and this includes you 'anon'. However, since it appears that you were not born with the gene of altruism, I can now easily agree with those who speak of survival of the fittest, as the answer to the problem of the weaker genes in our species, with respect to “Peak Oil”.

All of you people who believe in Santa, Jesus and whatever magical, mystical superstition you can conjure up to validate your existence, the reality enema is on its way.

Esta su bogar preparado para no desperdiciar energia ~ Puede producir su propio aumento ~ Como es afectada su vida por el creciente costo de la gasolina ~ ?

From now on, I will only respond to you when you answer me in Spanish and after Spanish, let’s move into another language ~ this time let’s go for the Asian communication, pick Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese ~ both dialects ~ and then we can choose a few more boring western Europe, again.

Last, but not least, Colin Campbell is anything BUT a "college boy" and Kenneth Deffeyes is also no "boy" or ~ you will be required to think, however.

In all sincerity, anon, I feel sorry for you and all those who are of like mind because you contribute only a spinal cord to our species rather than a large brain, which you were born with ~ and, not only do you not use it, you actually waste it.

At 3:56 PM, January 31, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Um you didn't actually respond to my question anyway so I'm not holding out hope for anything reasonable in future, Spanish or not.

And its really weird that you think that it was me putting in all those silly "when is the peak" comments

Truly, you seem a little unhinged.
See a doctor soon, I mean it.

Now i didn't want my last word on the matter to be accusation of mental illness so I'll finish instead by trying to outline my point one more time.

In a world where terrorism strikes fear into the hearts of those threatened by it, it is easy to justify wars/"military interventions" by playing the terrorism card. Playing the terrorism card to convince people to defy their own government is not going to work.

By no means in making this point do I wish to deny that the current policies of the U.S government are leading the world into what could possibly be a nuclear World War III. What I would like to point out is that for the U.S to stop its aggressive foreign policy in the Middle East there needs to be an argument more convincing for the American public. I'm sure rkelly would agree that the juggernaut America started its imperial strategies towards the Middle East decades ago. Suddenly giving that up would be like declaring war on itself.

P.S apart from using an online translator i have no hope in communicating in Spanish

Uuuuuhh, excuse me, can I come in?

"Peak oil" is a statistical reference point, not a moment in time. It is a theory that says we will as oil-users, reach a point when .... something happens. This is where the fuzziness comes in.

Probably the "something" that happens is we become aware that the cheap stuff has run out.

In the 1960's when I first got into the energy industries, it was said that we needed $5.00 a barrell or equivalent to bring on most of the reserves we knew existed but had not intention or expectation of chasing.

In the mid 1990's the big old companies working around the world could comfort themselves with the fact that their average cost of a barrel of oil or equivalent in gas/liquids was about $3.80 USD. Their "marginal" or the next barrel they produced was about $9.00. So the average cost was going up.

If you factor in the cost to western economies, of sustaining presence in the middle east through the state of Israel, wars like Desert Storm and many such interventions, you might have to add another $2.00 a barrel as security costs.

Today the big companies are pursuing oil at USD$15.00 at the pipeline inlet. Why not? At USD$ 65.00 a barrel there's quite a margin to be had.

Incidentally at that price, there is more petroleum out there than any living generation will ever need simply because raw supply is not the limiting issue any more. Environmental protection will soon force us to stop wasting the stuff and what remains will last hundreds of years because demand went down.

A rose is a rose, a dog is a dog, any fact is what it is ... heated debate notwithstanding. Those who rant and rave about silly side issues will disappear into the shadows surrounding this medium, never to be held to account for their nonsense.

For fact-loving, concerned citizens, focus on your vote and your children. Conserve and vote for those who advocate conservation - not because of supply but because of the ability of this environment to sustain future generations.
